Work with Light Artist Craig Winslow of Winslow Studio to learn how to make everyday spaces into glowing works of art in this hands-on family workshop exploring projection mapping, a creative technique that uses projectors to fit images, animations, and video onto real objects. We’ll practice techniques to transform walls, sculptures, and found shapes in magical and unexpected ways.

Using MadMapper, families will learn the basics of mapping digital media to physical objects while discovering tips and best practices for creating eye-catching light art. Participants will also experiment with simple interactive elements like live camera input, sound-reactive visuals, and beginner-friendly controls.

We’ll share inspiring examples of mobile projection setups and creative ways to bring light art anywhere, from rooftops and backyards to parks and forests. Designed for families with kids ages 7+, this collaborative workshop encourages curiosity, teamwork, and playful experimentation as families create, test, and transform spaces together.

Why join? This workshop invites families to explore creativity and technology side by side, using light, motion, and teamwork to reimagine the spaces around them.

Winslow Studio is creatively led by light artist Craig Winslow, who has a foundation in branding, 3D art, and industrial design, giving him a refined eye for sweating the details. His career began at the award winning brand studio JDK Designs, was awarded the 2016 Adobe Creative Residency, and has worked with Adobe, Tim Burton, Coca-Cola, NikeLab, The Neon Museum, and more.

Cost: $55 before March 31 ; $65 after March 31 Analog production methods shaped graphic design for generations, influencing both aesthetics and workflow. This workshop begins with an examination of analog graphic design production, drawing from Briar Levit’s research and her documentary Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production. Participants will explore how mid-century through late twentieth-century processes influenced layout, design, and visual communication.

Participants will then engage in a hands-on exploration of these methods, using copy galleys, Letraset, grids, and other analog materials to build a print layout. Briar Levit (PSU Professor of Graphic Design) and Michael Ellsworth (design studio Civilization’s Creative Director and Designer) will guide the process, emphasizing composition, typography, and material awareness.

No experience is required. Participants will leave with a completed layout and a practical understanding of analog graphic design techniques.

Why join? Ideal for designers, artists, and creatives drawn to print, process, and material-based making, this workshop offers a focused introduction to the craft and discipline of analog graphic design.

Join us for a companion screening event at PAM CUT’s Tomorrow Theater for the film Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production, April 9, 2026 at 7 p.m. A panel discussion with Briar Levit & Michael Ellsworth will follow the film.

Briar Levit is a professor of graphic design at Portland State University in Oregon, USA. Levit’s feature-length documentary, Graphic Means: A History of Graphic Design Production, tells the story of how production technologies and workflows informed graphic design from the analog mid-century to the Digital Revolution at the end of the 20th century. She edited Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History(2021), which includes the research of 19 scholars including herself.

Currently, Levit co-directs The People’s Graphic Design Archive, a crowd-sourced digital archive with an aim to help create more inclusive and participatory design histories.

Michael Ellsworth is a designer, creative director, and co-founder of the design studio Civilization. His work is grounded in design for advocacy and advocating for design, examining how visual communication functions as a civic and cultural force that shapes public understanding and participation. Under his leadership, Civilization has received the National Design Award for Communication Design from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, along with honors from the Webby Awards and the Anthem Awards.

Through his studio, teaching, and public programming, Ellsworth connects design history, contemporary practice, and the broader public as the founder of Volumes Design Library and an educator at Portland State University, where he supports the student-run Kemeny Design Lecture Series.

Discover the art of storytelling through flowers in this hands-on workshop inspired by the rich visuals and layered opulence of Marco Brambilla’s video collage Heaven’s Gate. We’ll explore how flowers can convey drama, excess, and narrative, transforming seasonal blooms into bold, immersive arrangements.

The workshop begins with a guided gallery walk to see the artwork Heaven’s Gate to spark inspiration, followed by an immersive floral session where you’ll receive all the tools, tips, and a curated selection of vibrant, seasonal flowers to create your own elegant, maximalist floral still life. No experience is required—just bring your love of flowers, art, and imagination.

Led by Portland-based floral artist Bianca Sparta of Colibri, celebrated for her eclectic and extravagant designs, this workshop welcomes every approach—from soft and subtle to daringly dramatic. Together, we’ll respond to the textures, colors, and stories in Brambilla’s artwork to craft arrangements that are as layered, grandiose, and captivating as his cinematic world.

Colibri is Bianca Sparta. With over a decade of experience working with flowers, Bianca brings her fine art background to intersect with modern day florals, creating a unique aesthetic and retail environment that stands alone.

Saturdays, May 2 & 9, 1 – 4 p.m. Step into the process of creating immersive light art in this two-session, hands-on workshop led by Craig Winslow, Founder & Chief Creative Officer of Winslow Studio. Designed for adults who want to experiment, prototype, and explore new ways to project digital media onto physical spaces, the workshop emphasizes guided exercises, collaborative problem-solving, and iterative making. You’ll learn by doing as you test ideas, refine techniques, and develop your own approach to projection mapping.

May 2, 1:00-4:00 PM

Session 1: Foundations

May 9, 1:00-4:00 PM

Session 2: Interaction & Installation

By the end, you’ll leave with practical projection mapping skills, a working concept or prototype, and practical strategies to continue your creative exploration, ready to transform walls, objects, and unexpected spaces into luminous, interactive experiences.

Winslow Studio is creatively led by light artist Craig Winslow, who has a foundation in branding, 3D art, and industrial design, giving him a refined eye for sweating the details. His career began at the award winning brand studio JDK Designs, was awarded the 2016 Adobe Creative Residency, and has worked with Adobe, Tim Burton, Coca-Cola, NikeLab, The Neon Museum and more.

Cost: $40 for 1 adult & 1 child; additional adult: $10, additional child: $5 Join teaching artist and pattern-maker Julz Clementine for a creative, hands-on family workshop inspired by David Hockney and his vibrant digital flower drawings.

We’ll begin in the exhibition David Hockney: Works from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, where families will explore Hockney’s creative process through playful looking games and guided prompts. Participants will discover how he used digital tools to experiment with color, shape, and composition. Inspired by his daily practice of sending flower drawings to friends, families will work together to imagine and design a shared digital bouquet that brings everyone’s ideas into one collaborative artwork.

Next, families will move from iPad to hands-on making, transforming their designs into bold cut-paper postcards ready to share with loved ones near and far. Along the way, there will be time to reflect, share, and celebrate each other’s creations.

To wrap up, each family will write a thoughtful, self-addressed note filled with something kind, encouraging, or lighthearted. Your message will be mailed back to you later as a special surprise.

This engaging experience brings together digital creativity, hands-on artmaking, and meaningful connection, with a touch of snail mail magic!

Why join? Create something meaningful together, practice close looking at art, and transform a single family artwork into shareable postcards and a heartfelt keepsake, inspired by David Hockney’s joyful practice of connecting with others through art. It’s an opportunity to blend digital creativity, hands-on making, and real-world connection into one memorable experience.

Each family group must include at least one adult and one child, add additional adults for $10, additional children for $5 each.
