The works span nearly a century, from the monumental 1887 canvas of Jamaica by Martin Johnson Heade, to Marc Chagall&#8217;s 1975 <em>The Betrothed<\/em>, these works follow the revolutionary changes in art in Europe and the United States. Two still lifes by Pablo Picasso trace the shift from the astonishing 1912 debut of cubism with<em> La Glace<\/em> (bowl of ice cream) to its mature form in 1938.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The landscape form transmutes from Heade\u2019s highly detailed canvas to Claude Monet\u2019s light-filled Impressionist masterpiece <em>Banks of the Seine River near V\u00e9theuil<\/em>, to Chaim Soutine\u2019s blood-red expressionist 1918 <em>Southern Landscape<\/em>. Also included are rare landscapes by Henri Matisse and Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, and a stunning scene of lovers floating in the night sky by Chagall based on stories in <em>Thousand and One Nights<\/em>. The Portland Art Museum is grateful to be able to exhibit these artworks during the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/event\/monet-to-matisse\/\">Monet to Matisse: French Moderns<\/a> <\/em>exhibition, providing a number of provocative parallels to the treasures on loan this summer from the Brooklyn Museum.<\/p>","excerpt":"<p>Fourteen art treasures from the collection of the Kirkland family, many of which have not been publicly displayed for decades. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/parkingkitty.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/reef-mobile-parking-made-easy\/id1502843483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical.
