Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Isaka Shamsud-Din: Rock of Ages<\/em> is an intimate exhibition celebrating the Portland artist\u2019s masterful paintings, rich in a narrative combining personal stories and folklore. Shamsud-Din\u2019s paintings also celebrate and honor individuals by capturing portraits. Tightly composed and with a vibrancy of color, the works invite viewers to be among these individuals and warm settings. The exhibition is titled after Shamsud-Din\u2019s painting of his father, Rock of Ages<\/em> (1976), the museum\u2019s most recent acquisition of the artist\u2019s work. Capturing his subject in the luscious garden that his father prided himself in\u2014a setting that was particularly special for the very close father and son\u2014Shamsud-Din invites the viewer to see<\/em> this man. In Brothers Phree<\/em> (ca. 1990), Shamsud-Din reveals a scene at a local club then called the Welcome Inn, on Northeast Alberta Street. It is a happening place of social gathering, playing pool, dancing, and relaxing, while the backdrop of the Pyramids of Giza is a reminder of roots to Africa and pre-colonial kinship. With the support of the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) and Teressa Raiford of Don\u2019t Shoot Portland, the exhibition will also highlight the significant mural projects Shamsud-Din has created for Portland in a span of more than 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isaka Shamsud-Din<\/a> (born 1940) came to Portland via Texas when he was in the first grade. The sixth of 14 children, Shamsud-Din became aware of the many inequitable systems as a young black person navigating his world on a daily basis. However, Shamsud-Din has maintained his commitment to art, education, and work for the African American community and his home. In 2019, Shamsud-Din was recognized with Isaka Shamsud-Din Day, a Juneteenth celebration at Portland\u2019s City Hall honoring his work as an artist and social justice leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical. The bus and streetcar travel directly past the Museum, and the MAX light rail has a stop only four blocks away.\u00a0TriMet\u2019s Trip Planner<\/a>\u00a0gives you step-by-step travel directions from your location by bus, light rail, or streetcar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
