The Photography of Terry Toedtemeier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lifelong Oregonian Terry Toedtemeier (1947 \u2013 2008) was a dedicated photographer, photography teacher, and the Portland Art Museum\u2019s first curator of photography. His many notable professional activities\u2014from cofounding Portland\u2019s Blue Sky Gallery to rapidly growing the museum\u2019s photography collection\u2014never took away from his deep passion for making his own photographs. Toedtemeier\u2019s artistic legacy is explored in Sun, Shadows, Stone<\/em>, the first exhibition to feature works from all phases of his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A self-taught photographer who studied geology in college, Toedtemeier began experimenting with the medium during the 1970s, focusing on his friends and colleagues as subjects. By the 1980s he attracted wider critical attention through his landscape images, which were influenced by his deep understanding of both the photography traditions of the American West and the land\u2019s underlying geology. He traveled throughout Oregon, paying particularly close attention to the Columbia River Gorge, the coastline, and the arid southeast, enthralled by the diversity of terrain contained within the state\u2019s borders. Digital and color photographs created shortly before the end of his life demonstrate Toedtemeier\u2019s ever-present willingness to experiment and see anew through the
camera\u2019s lens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical.
