Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In this APEX program titled Venus Retrograde, <\/em>Hannah Piper Burns (b. 1984) takes reality shows as the medium of her work. In particular, she uses episodes of The Bachelor<\/em> and its spinoffs The Bachelorette<\/em> and Bachelor in Paradise<\/em>. Through Burns\u2019 use of editing, splicing, glitches, and repetition, she rips apart the seams of a stifling narrative to pull out pieces of the morass lying just beneath the highly stylized gloss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through Burns\u2019 films and installations, we begin to see the uncomfortable forces and paradoxes that define much of our own contemporary moment. What becomes clearer is a patchwork of the banal and profound absurdities\u2014of love and failure, of surveillance and spectacle\u2014pulling the viewer into dream logic that is cinematic and intimate. What is experienced puts the viewer in a metaphysical pickle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a multimedia artist, Burns creates projects spanning video, performance, installation, text, and interactivity. Her work has been shown widely across the United States and Canada, including the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; the Indie Bits Festival in Columbia, South Carolina; the Winnipeg Underground Film Festival; and as part of Physical Education\u2019s Say When<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical.
