Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dawn Cerny\u2019s works are at once formal and reductive while existing in a realm of the playful and ridiculous. The Seattle artist\u2019s newest sculptures and works on paper resemble familiar forms that suggest furniture and domestic objects occupying our interior spaces. Sculptures created from cardboard, fiberglass, and bright, matte colors exude levity while calling our attention to their form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her sculptural work, the objects seductively draw in viewers to contemplate their function, texture, and relation to the human body. Simultaneously, these same works reject the more traditional notions of sculpture and furniture, existing in an awkward place in between. They are gloppy objects that embrace a different kind of abstraction. Amassed within the galleries, their collective presence may evoke the space of a home or independent figures standing together in a room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cerny likens her work to Buster Keaton\u2019s slapstick comedy as \u201can absurdist response to the productive rationalism of modern times\u2014one that both represents and is alienated from everyday life.\u201d Cerny\u2019s work has been exhibited at many venues including Henry Art Gallery in Seattle; Or Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia; Night Gallery in Los Angeles; and Derek Eller Gallery in New York. This will be her first exhibition in Portland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

APEX is an ongoing series of exhibitions of Northwest-based artists, curated by Grace Kook-Anderson, The Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Northwest Art.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical.
