Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whether reflecting the visible world or an artist\u2019s interior thoughts, the contemporary photograph actively participates in almost all aspects of modern life. This exhibition demonstrates the photographic medium\u2019s ability to encompass a dizzying range of reactions to social change, political unrest, new technologies, and cultural confusion and upheaval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artists have long used the camera to both record and react to current events, but many contemporary practitioners push the conventional understanding of the photograph as marker of truth or reality, applying nontraditional viewpoints\u2014both compositional and conceptual\u2014to their work. Cutting-edge digital capabilities play a critical role in these expressions, as artists use new means to explore and question the influence of technology on modern society. Among other works from the permanent collection, Ben Buswell\u2019s sculptural exploration of the self, Richard Mosse\u2019s psychedelic take on documentary war reportage, and Penelope Umbrico\u2019s iPhone charting of mountains in nature and popular reproductions demonstrate the rich expressive potential of the contemporary photographic image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical.
