Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 1980, Paige Powell, a fifth-generation Oregonian, left Portland for New York City. After landing at Interview<\/em> magazine, where she rose to associate publisher, Powell became close with Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco and Alba Clemente, Tama Janowitz, Stephen Sprouse, and others who would come to define the New York art scene over the next decade. Camera in hand, she moved through the city, forming relationships with people and places that spanned across cultural and economic boundaries, capturing the city\u2019s many realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking up video in the early \u201880s, Powell was one of the first in New York to adopt camcorder technology. After returning to Portland in 1997, she continued to embrace digital tools as she documented the rising careers of close friends such as Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini and filmmaker Gus Van Sant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until recently, Powell\u2019s extensive collection of images, video, and ephemera from over a decade in New York lay tucked away in boxes. For the past two years she has been working with archivists, unearthing and cataloging her body of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culled from this archive, The Ride<\/em> comprises a three-channel video featuring never-before-seen recordings of Andy Warhol and Keith Haring; candid photographs of Powell\u2019s friends including Warhol, Haring, and Basquiat; and Beulah Land<\/em>, an interactive installation of over 800 images recreating a 1984 exhibition of Powell\u2019s photographs, with sounds mixed by artist David LaChapelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ride<\/em> continues the Museum\u2019s commitment to showing video and new media, inviting visitors back to the video space created for last year\u2019s Richard Mosse: The Enclave<\/em>. The multi-part installation in the Museum\u2019s Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art immerses visitors in the creative climate of 1980s New York, while the gallery adjacent to the video space displays Kenny Scharf\u2019s companion exhibition Cosmic Cavern<\/em><\/a> and the Link Gallery downstairs presents key works by other pivotal contemporary artists, including Warhol and Basquiat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical. The bus and streetcar travel directly past the Museum, and the MAX light rail has a stop only four blocks away.\u00a0TriMet\u2019s Trip Planner<\/a>\u00a0gives you step-by-step travel directions from your location by bus, light rail, or streetcar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
