Overview<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the great ceramic traditions of the world, the Japanese alone sustain a thriving studio potter industry. More than 10,000 Japanese potters make a living crafting tea bowls, sak\u00e9 bottles, flower vases, and tableware. Whether crafted of unglazed stoneware or refined porcelain, these intimately scaled art works are a cherished part of daily life in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contemporary masters of clay art in Japan are deeply aware of their traditions in thrown, hand-built, carved or molded forms; they celebrate a reverence for the unique qualities of the material and embrace the unpredictability of the firing process. Wares by Nakazato Takashi and Yoshida Yukihiko, both potters in their late seventies, exemplify the best of Japan\u2019s enduring taste for wabi-sabi<\/em>, an austere simplicity infused with emotional depth. Other artists, consciously working within global idioms, stretch the boundaries of utility to explore ever more sculptural forms, as in Hoshino Satoru\u2019s writhing, organic Spring Snow No. 12<\/em>, or the frozen motion of Fujikasa Satoko\u2019s Flow #1<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contemporary Japanese Clay<\/em> celebrates artistic innovation and superb craftsmanship in Japanese ceramics from the 1950s to the present, revealing the growth of the Museum\u2019s holdings in this fascinating art form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Museum is conveniently located on the historic Park Blocks in the center of downtown Portland, which is easy to get around by public transit or on foot. The Portland Business Alliance has installed way-finding signs which direct you to the cultural district, where the Museum is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is generally plenty of street parking surrounding the Museum. These spaces range from 1 \u2013 4 hours and can be paid for using a credit card or the Parking Kitty app<\/a>. There are also surface parking lots, and parking garages within 1 \u2013 4 blocks of the Museum. The closest surface lot is located at SW Main St. between SW 10th Ave. and Park Ave, and there are dedicated accessible and van accessible spaces. This lot accepts credit card or the Reef app<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public transit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Getting to get to the Museum by public transportation is straightforward and economical.
